An In-Depth Guide to Middle School Summer Camps

Summer is the perfect time for middle school students to dive into new activities and advance their learning — whether it’s taking a class to catch up or get ahead for the next school year.

Summer camps and programs support social and academic growth, help students make friends in their community, and keep them engaged during their time off. Plus, they ease the transition between semesters.

In this post, we explore the different types of summer programs Fusion Academy offers middle school students across the U.S., including:

Fusion Academy has over 80 campuses nationwide in states like California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Each campus offers summer camps tailored to its local community.

Fusion Academy’s Middle School Summer Camp

Fusion Academy is a private school with campuses across the U.S., fostering a tight-knit, diverse community ideal for all students — including neurodivergent learners. Our campuses cap at around 100 students, so teachers aren’t swamped by large class sizes or unmanageable workloads. That lets us keep academic and social programs flexible and personalized to each student’s interests and needs.

We offer several programs for students, including middle school summer camps for 5th–8th graders. These day camps spark creativity and learning while helping students build friendships through structured social activities and outdoor fun.

  • Duration: One week of half-day sessions
  • Cost: $675 per week

Each campus offers a unique camp experience shaped by enrolled students’ interests. To find out which summer camps are available near you, you can reach out for more information.

A Full List of Summer Programs at Fusion Academy

Middle school day camp offers a fun, engaging way for students to spend their summer. Other options include:

  • Summer classes for credit: Students can enroll in core or elective courses to fulfill required credits. Many students use summer to dive deeper into their interests — like STEM electives for those pursuing a STEM Endorsement on their diploma.
  • Remediation and enrichment: Tutoring or full math and reading remediation for students a grade or more behind, available for grades 4–12.
  • Test prep and college readiness: SAT/ACT prep plus college advisory sessions covering applications, resume building, and more.

Summer Classes for Credit

Summer’s the ideal time to catch up on classes or get ahead. At Fusion, students can earn school credit through:

  • College preparatory courses
  • Honors courses
  • AP® courses (earn college credit depending on AP test scores)

We also offer Essential courses — these fulfill high school graduation requirements but aren’t aimed at college prep. A student’s schedule may include one course from each category: a college preparatory course, an AP® course, and an Essential course.

In our course catalog, students can choose from hundreds of courses. Popular summer options include math, science, history, and world languages.

At Fusion Academy, most classes are one-to-one, with one student paired with one teacher. This setup allows for a fully customized curriculum and learning experience.

If a student struggles with a concept, the teacher can slow down and offer extra support. If they master the material quickly, the teacher can accelerate and dive deeper — without the limits of a traditional classroom pace.

This one-to-one learning model is ideal for:

We also offer small group classes with just 2 to 5 students, allowing for more collaboration within the learning environment. You can view our small group courses in our course catalog.

Remediation and Enrichment

Fusion Academy offers comprehensive remediation programs to close learning gaps, including focused math remediation and reading intervention.

Math Remediation Program

Our math remediation program runs for 25 or 30 sessions, where students meet with their teacher twice a week for 50 minutes. This program can be completed on campus or virtually.

Sessions focus on solving practice problems together using ALEKS, an adaptive math software that updates each student’s learning path based on their skill level. This keeps the remediation program tailored to the student, so they’re not re-learning concepts they’ve already mastered.

While specifics vary by student, we recommend 2 hours of weekly self-study with ALEKS outside of 1-to-1 teacher instruction.

Reading Intervention Program

Our reading intervention program runs for 25 or 30 sessions, each 50 minutes long. Fusion offers two remedial reading classes, assigned based on students’ reading ability percentiles from enrollment placement tests:

1. The Reading Skills and Strategies Program

For students in the 15th to 40th percentiles, each session combines direct 1-to-1 literacy instruction with supervised self-study using Lexia, AI-powered software that delivers evidence-based literacy support. The program covers Comprehension, Grammar, and Word Study.

2. The Structured Literacy Program

For students at or below the 15th percentile, this program is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach (originally developed for students with dyslexia). It uses multisensory methods to make reading instruction more accessible and effective. Unlike software-driven programs like Lexia, Orton-Gillingham incorporates auditory, kinesthetic, and visual techniques to teach reading fundamentals. For example, teachers may use gel boards or knocking sounds to demonstrate spelling and word formation.

As of this writing, Structured Literacy is in pilot and may not be available in your area. Contact your local campus to inquire about availability.

Both remediation programs build executive functioning skills — organization, time management, and more — essential for classroom success and navigating life beyond school.
