Celebrate The Power of Personalized, 1-to-1 Learning!

National Personalized Learning Day is celebrated on January 21 (01.21), a nod to the 1-to-1 learning model that transforms education. This day invites educators to experience the impact of truly personalized learning, even within a busy classroom. On 01.21, we challenge you to carve out intentional one-to-one moments with your students and see how small shifts can make a big difference in engagement and growth.

What is Personalized Learning?

In traditional classrooms, teachers work to meet the needs of many different learners at once — a task that’s as challenging as it is important. Even the best educators can find it difficult to give every student the focused time and attention they deserve.

Personalized learning offers a way to bridge that gap. By creating space for one-to-one connection and adapting content to a student’s pace, interests, and goals, teachers can spark deeper engagement and confidence.

How to Celebrate National Personalized Learning Day

Personalized Learning Day is about bringing the best parts of 1-to-1 learning into any classroom: focused attention, genuine curiosity, and meaningful connection. Even in a larger class, teachers can bring the spirit of personalized learning to life with simple, impactful shifts. Here are a few ways to try it:

1. Start with connection

Kick off the day with a quick activity that reveals student interests. This might be a Bingo board, a scavenger hunt, or a short “Would you rather…?” game. Knowing your learners and helping them feel seen is the first step to personalizing instruction.

2. Offer learning choices

Use a choice board or learning menu so students can pick how they explore the topic at hand or show what they know. A little autonomy goes a long way!

3. Follow their curiosity

If a student shows interest in something related to the lesson, even if it branches in a new direction, invite them to explore it. Build in moments for students to share how the lesson ties to their personal interests.

4. Model real learning (and failing)

Show students that mistakes are normal. Invite them to respectfully correct you, offer feedback, or watch how you think through a misunderstanding. Doing this builds resilience and trust.

However you personalize your lessons for Personalized Learning Day, create space for one-to-one moments. You don’t need a full one-to-one session with every student to bring personalized learning to life. During independent work, pull students up one-by-one for a brief check-in about a project, goal, or challenge. These small touchpoints mirror the relationship-driven heart of one-to-one learning — and they make a lasting impact.

At its core, personalized learning works because students thrive when their needs are met and they feel genuinely known. By creating opportunities for choice and connection, even just for one day, you honor that truth and give students an experience that can spark real academic, social, and emotional growth.

The Power of Personalized Learning

Aubrey, Parent

One-to-one instruction provided our daughter with a safe and nurturing environment that made all the difference. The growth that she demonstrated, once she felt respected and appreciated by teachers, was tremendous. Our child was able to thrive academically and pursue her interests more deeply because of the one-to-one model. Teachers often took the time to understand her mental state and make sure she felt heard at the start of class, which allowed her to be ready for the content and buy into the classes.

Shenan, Parent

One-to-one lessons truly personalized teaching, it’s more like students learning from a friend.

Megan, Parent

One-to-one lessons allow teachers to help my children thrive by adapting their teaching to meet the needs and interests of each child. My daughter loves math for the first time in her life because her teacher shows her how to relate Algebra 2 to art (her passion). My son has four teachers who help him understand topics so well that he is able to chat with me all about his new learning when I pick him up.

Natalie, Parent

The individualized approach to learning helped my daughter thrive and enjoy learning again. She has always struggled with math but is now able to explain and teach me how to solve the problems she is given for homework. The teachers tailor the lessons to her individual needs in a one-on-one setting. Every day, they go over the material with her and make sure she is comfortable with what she has learned, before moving on to the next unit.

This level of teaching has made a world of difference for our child. The one-on-one lessons enabled her to engage in a way that she has never been able to in her entire academic career. The one-to-one lessons breaks down a wall that I think had always kept her slightly scared of asking questions that she really needed answered.

Lori, Parent

One-to-one lessons encourages open communication between students and staff. The fact that my son was able to meet with the staff and discuss his specific requests has boosted my son’s confidence and made him feel valued as an individual.

Courtney, Parent

One-to-one lessons allow teachers to take the time to understand individual needs, collaborate closely with families and professionals, and create an environment where students can genuinely thrive.

HF, Parent

The 1:1 format has helped my son be seen as an individual and allowed for a deeper, more engaged way of learning. The curriculum is tailored to his learning style and personalized to his interests, so he really wants to go to school!

Benefits of personalized, 1-to-1 Learning

The academic research is clear. When it comes to student learning, one thing makes a big difference: dedicated 1-to-1 time with a student and their teacher.
