Ismael (Ish) was born in Harbor City, CA but grew up in Iguala, Guerrero (Mexico). He came to the US at the age of 7 and thanks to his love of reading, he learned enough English in one summer to test out of ESL. He eventually graduated from UCLA in 2015 with a BA in English. He has more than six years of teaching experience and has taught various subjects, which include swimming, K-12/college-level work, and martial arts. He likes to draw on his experience in these subjects during his lessons in order to make them as effective and engaging as possible. As a native Spanish speaker, Ismael likes to converse in Spanish as often as possible.
Ismael has a wide range of hobbies. He began practicing martial arts during his last year at UCLA and has continued to train ever since. His primary style is Jeet Kune Do but he has practiced Boxing/Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Eskrima/Kali, MMA, and has participated in sword and shield seminars. Fun fact: Jeet Kune Do was created by Bruce Lee and Ismael’s first shifu (master) learned the art from one of Bruce Lee’s original students; this makes Ish a third generation Bruce Lee student. When he isn’t in a dojo, Ismael likes to read, listen to music, and craft. He also likes hiking and exploring the outdoors.
