How to Effectively Engage the Disengaged Student

(Grand Rapids, Mich. – April 19, 2023) Fusion Academy’s Manager of Social-Emotional Learning will lead an intensive workshop focused on engaging the most recalcitrant youth during this week’s Expressive Therapies Virtual Summit West.

“Disengagement produces all kinds of behaviors, from acting “too cool” to participate in activities, and can also manifest in power struggles,” said Coryn Nadeau, LCAT, ATR-BC, MA-AT, Fusion Academy’s Manager of Social-Emotional Learning and Student Programs.

Nadeau will host “Relationship-Based Frameworks for Engaging Disengaged Youth” Thursday, April 20, 2023, at 10 a.m. PDT, during the second weekend of the sixth annual Expressive Therapies Summit. The summit brings art, drama, music, writing, psychodrama, dance, and play together for the multidisciplinary virtual program intended for board-certified registered art therapists, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and psychotherapists.

The second week of the summit’s programming begins Thursday, April 20 through Sunday, April 23 and offers continuing education credits needed for professional licensure. The continuing education categories include counseling theory, wellness and prevention, group dynamics and counseling, clinical interventions and evidence-based practice, psychological and psychotherapeutic theories, and practice.

Nadeau’s three-hour program will explore humanistic, strength-based, and trauma-informed approaches to engaging youth. Attendees will explore communication frameworks that debunk power struggles and reactivity. Participants will leave with tangible strategies for engaging young clients that can immediately be implemented into their practices.

“I am honored to support the navigation of the difficult challenges we face when youth are disengaged,” said Nadeau. “Our professional community is equally committed to creating environments where youth are healthy both socially and emotionally.”
