Reframing Motivation: An Executive Function–Informed Approach to Help Kids Get Going

Why can gifted and 2E children easily engage in activities they love, sometimes for hours, yet struggle immensely with doing tasks that are seemingly simple? Traditional methods like rewards, consequences, and reminders often prove ineffective, and often lead to increased frustration for both children and parents.

This session offers a fresh perspective on motivation and blends neuroscience with a neurodiversity-informed, compassionately curious parenting style. Parents will leave with a new understanding of motivation and feeling empowered with strategies and creative ideas for helping their child get started on all types of activities and tasks while also strengthening their relationship.

Fusion Academy Newton and the Massachusetts Association of Gifted Education (MAGE) are excited to collaborate with Courtney Edman, of 2tametheshamE to present this topic.  See Courtney’s bio below:

In 2020, Courtney decided to utilize the knowledge, skills, and experience she had gleaned in more than 20 years as a parent, physical therapist, and executive director to a new career. A lifelong learner, she was ready to apply her expertise to coaching, helping children and young adults with complex learning profiles — and their parents – by spreading awareness and sharing the know-how she gained from her personal experience. It was not until her own son was 17 years old that she learned the term “twice-exceptional.” This opened the doors to understanding the challenging journey that she and her son had been on and helped her understand the approach needed to truly support him. Since becoming aware of that term, she has been on a mission to aid families in gaining the skills, affirmation, and strategies that neurodivergent people need to thrive. In pursuit of that mission, Courtney launched 2tametheshamE, Inc., in 2022, providing coaching, education, and advocacy for neurodivergent individuals and their parents.
