Coffee & Connections-What Happens Next: Supporting Adults with Autism Beyond School

Date & Time

Join us for Coffee and Connections on April 17, 2026, featuring Dr. Amy Wood, a passionate advocate, leader, and parent who brings both professional expertise and deeply personal experience to her work in the autism community.

In this powerful conversation, Dr. Wood will shed light on a reality many families quietly face. Individuals on the autism spectrum who are often described as “high functioning” can appear to be navigating life successfully, yet many encounter significant challenges once the structure of school ends and true independence begins.

Together, we will explore what really happens next. Where do the gaps exist? Why are so many individuals left without the support they need? And most importantly, what can we do differently?

Dr. Wood will share how Project Beacon is reimagining what adulthood can look like through innovative, individualized approaches that prioritize independence, purpose, and meaningful community connection. You will also learn more about the Beacon Access Center and the vision for an intentional community designed not just for individuals to get by, but to truly thrive.

Dr. Wood’s journey began in clinical pharmacy, earning her doctorate with highest honors from the University of North Carolina and serving at MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Houston. After her son’s autism diagnosis, she redirected her career to focus on intervention, advocacy, and systems change. For more than 20 years, she has been a leading voice in advancing access to services, supporting families, and shaping policy across Texas and beyond.

Whether you are a parent, educator, or community partner, this morning will leave you informed, inspired, and more deeply connected to the work we can do together.

We look forward to having you with us.
