Brief Presentation Overview
This will be an exploration of common mind–body concerns in youth (functional neurological symptoms, somatic symptom presentations, and chronic pain), particularly when medical workups are normal. This session reviews evidence‑based psychological and interdisciplinary treatments for improving functioning and reducing distress.
About The Presenter
Julia Kovalenko, PhD, is an assistant professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and a pediatric psychologist at Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kovalenko provides assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with a wide variety of medical conditions in inpatient and outpatient settings. Common treatment targets include adjustment to diagnosis, anxiety and/or depression related to medical concerns, non-adherence to medical regimen, pain management, and return to functional activities following medical diagnosis/treatment/hospitalization. Dr. Kovalenko completed her clinical psychology doctoral education at the University of Houston, clinical internship training at Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital.
