Dr. B. Stuart Hayden

Having grown up in Salt Lake City, after high school, Dr. B attended the University of Utah, and earned both a B. A. (magna cum laude) and M. A. in English. Dr. B also earned a Ph. D. at the University of New Mexico (UNM), where, like D. H. Lawrence and Georgia O’Keeffe, he fell under the spell of the culture, history, and landscapes of that magical place. While at UNM, Dr. B received an “Outstanding Teacher Award” for my ability to relate to students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Dr. B has spent more than twenty years as a university instructor and tenured professor at Western Michigan University (where he taught a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in writing and literature) and, most recently, at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Extension (where I taught post-doctoral courses in Medical Writing). While in Michigan, he served as the Executive Editor of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Over the years, he has written and published many books and articles. His most recent ones include an article on effective documentation for the pharmaceutical industry published in Acta Scientific Pharmaceutical Sciences, which is an international refereed journal. Other recent publications include two textbooks on writing: Thought & Writing: A Complete Course in Reading, Thinking, and Writing, as well as Writing Across the Curriculum: Effective Writing for Business and the Professions. Dr. B also recently published his memoirs, entitled Paved with Good Intentions, and forthcoming (hopefully this fall) will be his edition of Thomas Lovell Beddoes’ Death’s Jest-book, which is a masterpiece of 19th century drama unpublished during the author’s lifetime.

Fun Facts and Hobbies

  • In his spare time, he like to cook, and, occasionally, write music.
  • For no particular reason, last year he wrote a Shakespearean sonnet for Asset magazine dedicated to miniature donkeys.
