Join us at Fusion Academy Columbia for a special in-person parent and community event in recognition of POTS Awareness Day. This informative and supportive conversation will focus on the unique challenges students and families may face when navigating chronic illness, school attendance, and academic success.
We are pleased to welcome Susy Thomas, who will share both her professional expertise and personal perspective as a parent.
Dr. Susy Thomas is Director of the Columbia office of Alvord Baker & Associates, a full-service mental health practice offering individual and group therapy for children, teens, and adults, psychiatric care, and comprehensive evaluations. A licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience, she has expertise in providing evaluations that assess each student’s learning strengths and needs, including attention, memory, and executive functioning skills. Dr. Thomas co-founded the Pathways to Young Adulthood Clinic at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and specializes in supporting students with learning and attention differences and chronic medical conditions such as POTS, diabetes, migraines, and food allergies through the transition to college. She has visited more than 60 universities, including numerous disability support offices. As the mother of a college student with chronic health conditions, Dr. Thomas brings both professional expertise and a parent’s perspective to helping families prepare for college.
Whether you are a parent, educator, mental health professional, or community member, this event provides an opportunity to learn, connect, and gain valuable insights into supporting students facing complex health challenges.
We hope you will join us for this meaningful conversation as we build greater understanding, awareness, and support for families navigating chronic illness and school-related challenges. Together, we can help students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
