Anita Nolen

English Teacher/Mentor

Anita’s passion for teaching, writing and self-discovery is evident in her academic, professional and personal background. She graduated cum laude from the Johns Hopkins University with a BA in Writing and Literature and went on to pursue an MFA in Fiction from the highly ranked graduate program at University of Houston, where she gained three years’ experience teaching college-level, writing-intensive courses as a graduate teaching fellow.

A life-long student of meditation, after college Anita spent a year at a yoga and meditation retreat center in upstate New York, where she held staff positions in content development and special guest hosting. After graduate school, Anita worked in advertising, first as a copywriter and then as the Strategic Marketing Manager at the largest communications firm based in the southwest, overseeing the messaging and content of communications campaigns for major corporate clients including Enron and Sysco Foodservices. After relocating to Los Angeles, Anita worked in the entertainment industry as an assistant to prominent talent agents and then as a professional make-up artist for several years.

Before returning to the DC area, Anita taught third grade at a private day school in Palo Alto, California, also serving as the school-wide writing tutor and offering creative writing classes for gifted primary and middle school students. In addition, she has more than five years’ experience as an SAT prep and academic tutor.

She continues to work on her own writing projects, including a collection of creative nonfiction pieces entitled, “I know What Normal Isn’t.” Anita’s other passions include going to see live local music, singing karaoke, and spending quality time with family, friends and Louie, her Chihuahua.
