Vanessa is a History and English teacher at Fusion Academy Austin. She’s a native of Dallas-Fort Worth, but she’s called Austin home since 2015. Her favorite aspect of teaching is when a student who has previously not enjoyed studying history or literature begins to realize that these subjects aren’t dull, but are the story of who we are as a society. When it comes to teaching at Fusion, Vanessa enjoys the opportunity to create lessons that match a student’s individual learning style, social and emotional needs, as well as their interests. Vanessa feels that the one-to-one environment allows her to build stronger mentoring relationships with her students. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in History at Texas Woman’s University and her Masters in French History from the University of Texas at Arlington. In graduate school she spent the majority of her time studying the French Revolution and enjoys reading books by Ruth Scurr, Jeremy Popkin, Michael Legierre, and Lynn Hunt. Before moving to Austin, Vanessa was a graduate teaching assistant in Arlington, Texas.
In addition to working at Fusion, Vanessa enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons, spending time with her family, playing ukulele, and making visits to Hogwarts and Middle Earth. Some of her favorite authors include: Voltaire, Jeffrey Eugenides, William Blake, Isabel Allende, Khaled Hosseini, and Ken Kesey.
