Umi Niilampti

Humanities Teacher/Mentor

Umi NiiLampti was born in Tuskegee, Alabama and received his BA in English, History and Music from Wesleyan University and University of Natal (South Africa). He later received his MS at School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont.  Throughout his academic career, Umi worked with a number of non- profit and community driven organizations in an effort to help others and strengthen disenfranchised communities.

After completing college, Umi chased his dreams to become a Sony Recording Artist for over fifteen years. He recorded three major records with Sony Records, and another nine albums independently.  His music was used to show listeners how to mobilize and motivate themselves in their moments of despair.  In his respective career, he has opened for or shared the stage with Jay Z,  Prince, Stevie Wonder, Dave Chappelle, Maceo Parker, Steve Beck, Ice Cube, The Roots and Erykah Badu just to name a few.

At Fusion Academy, Umi hopes to share his experiences and insight with tomorrow’s leaders. Besides teaching English, World and US History, and Life Skills, Umi also offers a unique course entitled Music Business.  He is a constant reminder that “what you dream-you can achieve”, and he is determined to ignite a fire of success in anyone’s path he crosses.
