Mitch was born in Indianapolis, spent a significant amount of time in the Midwest as a child, but calls the Pacific Northwest home. His kind and nurturing parents still live in his hometown of Gig Harbor, Washington. Mitch finished up a couple degrees at Whitworth University in Spokane, WA, one of which was a Masters in Teaching. He started his professional journey at an alternative school in Spokane. That experience made him realize that, like Toto once sang, it was going to take a lot to take him away from alternative ed.
But come 2012, because life is interesting, he found himself teaching terribly underserved 9th graders on the west side of Chicago. It was a ride, but not like one at Magic Mountain. Mitch’s incredible wife ultimately decided on an ambitious career move, which brought them to L.A. at the end of 2014. He is thrilled to be back in alternative education at Fusion Academy, mostly because holistic well-being and creativity are the most important things to Mitch as an educator.
Outside of Fusion, there are a lot of things Mitch loves. Noteworthy items include: people, playing basketball, writing fiction, getting lost in a book, Milk Duds, riding his bike around town, traveling with his wife, and supporting Arsenal FC. Currently, when he is not doing teacher things, you will find him diligently drafting a YA sci-fi novel (unless he has “taken a break” to watch some Doctor Who).
