Rebecca Becnel

Teacher/Mentor

Rebecca is originally from Houston and moved as a teenager to New Orleans.   Since then she has lived in several states in the South.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from LSU where she majored in math and Spanish.  She later received her Master’s in Secondary Math Education with an additional certification in Administration.   She has taught Spanish and all levels of math at both the high school and university levels.  She has also served as a math content specialist for the East Region of Houston ISD and as a principal at a local HISD charter school.  During her teaching career Rebecca has received the National Presidential Award for Excellence in Math Education and the Milken National Educator Award.  In addition, she also was awarded a National Fund for Teachers grant to research in Italy the life of Galileo and his contributions to math and science.  Some of her favorite experiences in that program were the opportunities to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa and to see Galileo’s original telescope.

When not working with her students, Rebecca enjoys spending time with her family and friends.  She has a son and daughter and three grandchildren Leana, Ciaran, and Ethan.  When she has the time she also loves to travel.  Her favorite places to visit have been Machu Picchu, Florence, and all of Iceland.
