Matt Rowan

English Teacher

Matt Rowan has been teaching in various capacities all around the Midwest for nearly a decade, from the suburbs of Illinois, rural Missouri and the inner city of Chicago. He is a 2007 graduate of DePaul University (BA, English) in Chicago, and he received his MAT (Master of Art in Teaching) from National Louis University in 2015. Matt believes in the value of education and the importance of everyone becoming a lifelong learner. As a result, he’s always learning new things, ideally the easy way but often the hard way.

Matt is an avid reader and creative writer. He counts among his favorite authors (contemporary and not): Franz Kafka, George Saunders, Lindsay Hunter, Megan Stielstra, Samantha Irby, Vladimir Nabokov, Roxane Gay, Philip K. Dick, Kurt Vonnegut, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Shirley Jackson, James Baldwin, Rebecca Solnit, as well as Los Angeles-based writers such as Amelia Gray, Ben Loory and Patrick Somerville. He’s participated in literary events in and around Los Angeles and Chicago; served as a managing editor, fiction editor and reader for various award-winning publications; and published fiction, nonfiction and poetry in a number of literary journals and via other platforms, as well as authoring several collections of short stories. He’s a great fan of superhero comics and science-fiction, as well as the study of history, contemporary politics and economics. He’ll be happy to talk about any or all of this with you if you’re interested, or bother you about all of it if you’re not.
