Joann grew up on Long Island but has gradually moved west to New Jersey, spending many years living and/or teaching in New York City.
Joann is happy to be joining Fusion Montclair as the Learning Specialist and Special Education Lead. In this role, Joann will be working with teachers and students to find the best ways to motivate, engage and address students’ different learning styles and multiple intelligences.
Joann has a BS from Cornell University and a Master’s in Education from Hunter College (City University of New York.) She also has taken leadership coursework at Bank Street College in Manhattan. In the early-mid 2000’s, she taught and was later an instructional coach at the TAG (Talented and Gifted) school in East Harlem.
More recently, Joann was a founding staff member at PS 527 (East Side School for Social Action) on the Upper East Side of Manhattan where she worked as a special educator and instructional coach in the schools first years. It was extremely satisfying for Joann to be able to be part of building a school from its seed idea to its fruition, focusing on core values Joann holds close, such as inclusion and social action.
A Montclair resident for over 13 years, Joann recently moved out of town to a place with no good restaurants, so she is very happy to be back to work in such a great location where she can get a good lunch and see old friends. Joann lives with her husband, children, treeing-walker coonhound and a very lucky black cat.
As a parent, Joann has been very involved in the world of advocacy for children with a variety of disabilities, differences, and learning needs. Joann enjoys hiking with her family and visiting farms near her new “country” home, but her absolute favorite thing to do is hang out in the city with her husband and kids, who have been well–trained to enjoy Central Park, flea markets, coffee and bookshops, and walking over bridges.
