Jesse Wheeler has been a teacher and mentor for Fusion Academy Evanston since August 2017. He teaches Latin, Spanish, English, Language Arts and US History.
Jesse received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, where he majored Performance Studies and minored in African Studies. During this time, he lived and studied in Kenya as a visiting student through Friends World College. He received an MA in Ethnomusicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (minor Anthropology) and a PhD in Ethnomusicology from UCLA (minor Brazilian Studies). He received the prestigious Department of Education’s Fulbright-Hays award for his work on music, place and identity in Brasilia, Brazil.
He recently returned from 18 years in Brasilia, bringing with him back to the US his lovely Brazilian family (which frequents the Evanston campus to play and decorate!). While there, he was the Assistant to the Directorate for the Fulbright Commission and founded the exchange program service Encompass Brazil International, which creates customized immersion programs in Brazil and beyond for educational institutions. He is a band leader and sings and plays concertina in the Irish band Tanaman Dùl. In his down time, he writes finance marketing copy, records voice-overs, and translates Swahili and Portuguese. He is also an owner of Chicago roasters Big Shoulders Coffee Works.
