Music has been a way of life for Berry for as long as she can remember! She was learning to play the keyboard even before she learned to ride a bike! She hated the traditional Asian way of practicing keyboard so much that she once threw all the music sheets away when she was only eight.
Being inspired by artists as far apart as Cheers Chen (Taiwan) and The Cranberries, –(if you were wondering where the name Berry comes from, that’s a big clue), it was during her university years that her musical direction started to blossom. Berry swapped her keyboard for an acoustic guitar, and began her journey crafting her own original material while she completed her B.A. in accounting.
Berry was born and grew up in Shanghai, China and then moved to Singapore working as a financial analyst. While working for the fortune 500 companies, she was also a lead singer of an international band, The Blackberries for 5 years, and a street musician (busker), brining music to thousands of people for 3 years. In 2012 and 2015, Berry released her debut album Fly Away and second original album Wonderful Day, both featuring original songs in English & Mandarin.
With a dream of doing something with her love of music in a meaningful way, she quit her 9-to-5 job, carried her favorite quote ‘Be bold, be brave enough to be your true self’, and went to the concrete jungle to get her Master’s degree in music therapy with New York University.
“All of the sudden, it’s not about me anymore. It’s about whoever I am working with, to help, support, guide this person, to break down all kinds of physical, cognitive, emotional barriers that may have kept him/her from having a more intimate relationship with music or from being their true authentic self so that this person could experience music’s healing powers, and could keep grow as a human being.” – Berry
