Alex Grimes is a Chicago based composer, performer, and educator. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Alex received his BMus from Columbia College Chicago and earned a MA with honors in Music Composition from University of Huddersfield’s Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM) in the UK. Alex has collaborated extensively with many world leading practitioners in international contemporary music and presented his work in Europe and all over the US. Alex is the co-founder of Pianos without Organs-a performance production organization focused on novel technological interventions in traditional instrumental performance-culminating in the Pianos without Organs Festival, which features new works for computer-controlled acoustic instruments and/or electronics.
Music is a ceaseless source of inspiration for Alex and he finds no greater joy than in sharing it with students. Alex is a dedicated teacher, having taught students of diverse interests and backgrounds in a variety of contexts. In 2015, he developed the music program at OurBridge-an enrichment program in Charlotte that supports refugee and immigrant communities.
Hobbies include travel, (watching) film, discussing political theory, and reading philosophy. In his down time Alex likes to hang out with the sweetest little cattle dog, Dottie, and to go out dancing.
