Angel specializes as a math teacher at Fusion Academy, but also teaches a variety of other subjects, including life skills and art. She was born in Washington, D.C., and was raised in Montgomery County, MD. Her hobbies include reading books, drawing, journaling, weightlifting, and playing SMITE and other video games. She received her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Human Development, and her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction specializing in Secondary Mathematics, from the University of Maryland in College Park.
Angel has tutored math and other subjects to students in elementary school up to college students. She has experience in teaching diverse learners in different public suburban high schools in Montgomery County. In addition to being a teacher at Fusion Academy, she is also a math specialist and program associate for the tutorial services offered by University of Maryland’s Gossett Student-Athlete Center, where she supervises and educates tutors in implementing best teaching/tutoring strategies (particularly in math).
Not only is Angel passionate about math, but she is passionate about transforming how math is both taught and supported through tutoring. Angel is heartbroken to hear students share that they are bad at math or hate math, because she doesn’t think that these students were ever taught in a way that they would want to learn math: these students were never appreciated or supported in the mistakes that they have made in their math careers. Angel believes that students need to be encouraged and praised for making mistakes so that they can learn and grow from these experiences. She believes that struggling is a necessary component in becoming mathematically proficient thinkers. To this end, she will challenge her students to think critically and engage in mathematical discourse. She aims to foster mathematical thinking and problem solving so that students are able to apply what they’ve learned in the course to their own lives by the end of the course, in each student’s own way. Angel strives to help students develop a growth mindset and gain confidence in their mathematical abilities.
Angel is excited to share her passion for math and is looking forward to a fun and exciting school year!
