Music Appreciation is a broad overview of (primarily western) music in which students interested in music, no matter their experience level, explore music’s various functionalities in order to gain deeper understanding and appreciation for all types of music. The course begins by equipping students with basic music literacy and an understanding of core musical elements such as melody, rhythm, harmony, form, and texture. The units are much broader in scope and focus on music’s various purposes and functions, tracking these categories through historical transformations. The course studies sacred music, music for stage and screen, music for public entertainment, music as identity, and music as media.
