This course builds upon and extends scientific concepts acquired in earlier science courses. Students develop an understanding of the physical, chemical, and geological characteristics of the world’s oceans. They explore the structure, functions, behaviors, adaptations, and classifications of a variety of plants and animals that live in different marine habitats. Students learn how energy flows and matter cycles through both the abiotic and biotic components of Earth’s ocean system and investigate the impact of humans on that system. Laboratory activities may include dissections, experimentation, data collection (including water quality testing) and analysis. These activities are designed to develop scientific inquiry and communication skills.
