The first course in a three year Integrated Science sequence focuses on the interactions between matter and energy found in Earth systems, and how different systems affect the biosphere. Students learn the foundation of most scientific topics, such as mastery of the periodic table, atomic structure, and types of energy. They apply that study to matter to the composition of the Earth, particularly properties of rocks and minerals. Students study biogeochemical systems, the fundamentals of chemical reactions, acid-base chemistry, and how these interact in different ecosystems. Students learn and apply their learning in the lab, using sensors, probeware, and computer programs to collect and analyze data. In the honors course, students are expected to follow the scientific method more rigorously, have more independence in the lab, and write full lab reports. They also will read higher level scientific papers.
