This class will spark curiosity and engage students in authentic inquiry related to each core idea in the Life Sciences. The first unit will tap into a student’s understanding of the scientific method and explore new tools to move through each unit of the course. All the units will include focus on: biological literacy, authentic laboratory experiences, research design, analysis of collected data, and a sharing of results. The topics through which students will build their skills are: the organization and cellular nature of life, genetics, processes of life (such as respiration, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, cellular reproduction), the evolution of life on earth, the conditions that support life as we know it, ecology, and human biology. All the while, students will study various aspects of biotechnology and other applications of the material in their own life. Honors students will not only be exposed to and write portions of scientific papers, but will be expected to read papers and research at a higher level, as well as complete full lab reports regularly throughout the course.
