Karen Light

Karen Light is an art, math, life skills, and wellness teacher for Fusion Academy Oak Brook.  As a Teacher/Mentor, Karen uses art to inspire and empower her students to courageously seek, imagine, and create meaningful lives for themselves and to transform the world around them while having fun!  Karen received a BFA from Xavier University where she studied wood and ceramic sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking and fiber arts.  She also received an MA in Cultural Management from City University London where she concentrated on how organizations can use art for social change.

Since 1999, Karen has been teaching art through many school and organizations including University of Chicago Charter School (6, 7, and 8th grades), Changing Worlds, Urban Gateways Center for Arts Education and Oak Park Education Foundation.  Additionally, she has her own company, Creative Courage Art, through which she teaches classes, workshops, retreats and private lessons.  Karen has also privately tutored school-aged students for several years and in several academic subjects.

As an artist, Karen is a published Illustrator, with her second book being released in April 2016, and she recently completed a mural commission at the Hononegah High School Library.  She has exhibited in galleries, coffee shops and festivals around the Chicagoland area and beyond.

In her free time, Karen can be found doing yoga, learning to swing dance, walking her dog in the woods, quietly reading novels with her two cats and creating lots of art to loud music.  For three years, Karen played roller derby with Derby Lite and Chicago Outfit and she can still be found regularly skating around in her quads on the Salt Creek trail or at the Lombard roller rink where she’s learning to jam skate at the adult R&B night!
