Babette Dunkelgrun

Teacher / Mentor

Babette serves Fusion Academy as a teacher/mentor with a broad range.

A Dutch American, she grew up in the Netherlands, graduated from Utrecht University with a degree in French, and moved to London for her Creative Writing MA.

Prior to joining Fusion Walnut Creek, Babette taught at our Marin campus, and was delighted to return to the Fusion community. She has been a journalist in newspaper and magazine journalism, in-house and freelance. Babette has also worked in book publishing, on the editorial team at HarperCollins, and in Silicon Valley, writing audio scripts for Calm and Spotify.

Babette moved from Amsterdam to the Bay Area in 2011, and she’s passionate about sharing her background in the field, a variety of academic and creative tools, and her love for literature with students. As a teacher, she meets every student where they are, exploring their authentic voice, whether they consider themselves “writers” or not. Babette’s classroom is a safe space that centers curiosity, storytelling, and the joy of learning.

She has pursued her own continued education, as a writer and editor (SF Writers Grotto), a yoga/Pilates instructor (YogaTree) and integrative health coach (Institute for Integrative Nutrition). Her teaching incorporates this training in mindfulness, holistic mind/body connection, narrative medicine, and trauma informed yoga.

In her free time, she enjoys reading memoirs, listening to non-fiction podcasts, and hosting mindful retreats. Most people don’t know that her first teaching experience included her stint as a ski instructor to 3-6 year-olds on the bunny slope, and snowboard instruction.
