April Shiflett

American Sign Language and Science Teacher/Mentor

April grew up in an Air Force family and has lived all over the United States. She graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2000 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She has a passion for science, and taught science in Richardson, Texas for nine years. April’s love of history brought her to the Harn Homestead in Oklahoma City where she worked as the one-room schoolhouse educator. She loved giving students an authentic early 1900’s experience and educating the public about Oklahoma’s territorial years!

April discovered her enthusiasm for American Sign Language and began to study the language in 2012. She has her American Sign Language Communicator’s Certificate and strives to learn everything she can about American Deaf culture. In addition, April specializes in early childhood through early adolescence studies teaching general classes at Fusion such as math and science for middle school students.

April finds joy in running and she completed her first marathon in 2006. She enjoys sprint triathlons and social runs with her local running club. She loves biking with her two children and she relishes long walks with her dog Libby. In her spare time she watches documentaries, bakes with her daughter or watches comedy shows with her son.

April is eager to share her energy with her students! She celebrates the creative potential of every student and is thankful to be a part of Fusion!
