Laurie Woods graduated from Wesleyan University with majors in English and Psychology, she has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from New York University and two Master's degrees in education: a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus in Elementary Education from the University of Southern California and a Master's of Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in literacy and reading education from George Washington University.

She has worked as a clinician for Lindamood Bell and as an assistant teacher at Broad Branch Children's House and at Magnolia Montessori School.
