Joseph Kavitski

Head of School

Joe is thrilled to serve as Fusion Academy Rockville’s Head of School!

After graduating with a BFA in Film, Photography, and Visual Arts from Ithaca College, Joe lived in New York City for a decade working as a filmmaker. While shooting a documentary in Poland and Prague about a Holocaust survivor returning to the concentration camps he was placed in as a child, Joe became invested in utilizing digital media as a therapeutic tool. Earning his M.A. in Art Therapy from New York University, he worked with adolescents in the juvenile justice system, adults struggling with mental illness, older adults with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and spent time working at a clinic for men with physical and cognitive disabilities in Ghana. Later, he became a program manager for a NYC based non-profit organization specializing in 3D computer animation as a means to serve at-risk youth, teaching and running therapy groups in all five boroughs of New York City. He has guest lectured at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and served as adjunct faculty at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

Joe has published two book chapters about the implementation of technology as a therapeutic tool, “Expanding the Scope of Traditional Art Therapy with Green Screen Technology” in Video and Filmmaking as Psychotherapy: Research and Practice, and “The Animation Project” in The Handbook of Art Therapy and Digital Technology.

Having left the “Big Apple” for the “Old Bay,” Joe is elated to continue providing students with cutting-edge educational opportunities at Fusion. Before becoming Head of School, Joe served as Fusion Academy Rockville’s Director of Admissions and Outreach.

Joe is an avid weightlifter, yoga enthusiast, and Reiki practitioner. You’re likely to find him hiking with his wife and son, rocking out to live music, appreciating local art, antiquing for unique “curiosities,” or enjoying a spicy meal.
