M.A., M.S., B.A.

Education

John Lobsenz earned an M.A. in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, an M.S. in Creative Writing from the University of Edinburgh, and a B.A. in English from the University of Iowa.

Experience

From 2010- 2016, John taught English in Beijing and traveled extensively throughout China. The majority of his students in Beijing were either preparing for college in the U.S. or working professionals seeking jobs overseas.

Before becoming a teacher, John was assistant coach and development team coordinator for FLY Freestyle Ski Team. FLY functions as a pipeline to the U.S. Ski Team and made John aware of the importance of building foundational skills before introducing advanced tricks. Maddy Olsen, one of his former athletes, took sixth place in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Much of his teaching philosophy stems from the hours he spent teaching young athletes of all ages in gyms and on mountain tops. His aim as an English teacher is an extension of all he learned as a former coach. It is to bring out the best in his students and make them discover the untapped potential sleeping inside them; potential that they never knew they had. John is excited to be working with the amazing staff and students at Fusion Academy.
