Lunch and Learn: Social Media FOMO and Its Impact on Children, Adolescents, and their Families

In the ever-engaging world of social media, adults, adolescents, and children alike appear to be captivated by hearing pings on their phones, reading others’ status updates, posting flattering pictures, and depicting a lavish lifestyle. Based on what they see online or how many likes they gain on a post, people can get a feel for where they stand socially. Such depictions can oftentimes lead to anxiety, stress, and depressed mood as well as low self-esteem and a poor sense of identity. During this presentation, Drs. Luz Berrio and Ashley Tirado will discuss the psychological phenomenon or “Fear of Missing Out” (FOMO), its’ effects on children and adolescents, and implications for clinical practice. Ways to cope with FOMO and how families can help will also be addressed.

About the speakers…

Dr. Ashley Tirado-Martinez is a licensed psychologist who works primarily with children and adolescents. Dr. Tirado has 10 years of experience working in a variety of settings including crisis stabilization, community mental health, private practice, primary care, outpatient, and an exceptional education center. Additionally, Dr. Tirado has experience conducting psychoeducational testing to children and adolescents seeking clarification of their present academic, cognitive, and social-emotional functioning. Ashley is bilingual and works towards creating safe, compassionate, and therapeutic environments for children and their families where they can reach their utmost potential.

Dr. Luz Maria Berrio is a clinical psychologist working with children, adults, and families for over 15 years. Dr. Berrio’s focus is on providing a safe environment for individuals to express themselves and find healthy ways to deal with whatever stressors everyday life brings in a compassionate way.
