Math & Science Teacher
Darren was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but shortly thereafter moved to northern San Diego County, CA with his mom. Spending summers in Missouri and every other season in California gave Darren a great appreciation for California. He decided to stay in his beloved state for college and attended the University of California, Los Angeles.
At UCLA, Darren studied Chemistry while also fostering his love for performance arts, taking drama classes and performing at a local improv theater in Westwood – Ultimate Improv. After graduating from UCLA, Darren discovered his passion for teaching. He began teaching improv at Ultimate Improv while also tutoring students across town in math and science.
For the last 15 years, Darren has been a dedicated tutor to students of all ages, many of whom he was fortunate to watch grow into adults. All the while, Darren served as Director of Education at his home theater in Westwood (which in 2009 changed from Ultimate Improv to The Improv Space).
In 2018, Darren took over as Artistic Director of The Improv Space, owning the creative direction of the theater and the school.
Darren loves teaching math, science, and improv, and in 2019 he began looking for a teaching home where he could work with students in a more intensive, holistic setting than a traditional tutoring relationship might allow. That search brought him to Fusion Academy where he found a group of like-minded, dedicated teachers and administrators whom he is excited to join.
In his free time, Darren still loves performing, coaching, and teaching improv. He also enjoys listening to good podcasts (usually true crime, science, or comedy-based), hiking with his wife and pup, lounging around with his kitty watching Netflix, and using his telescope to check out cool, celestial events (he’s an astronomy nerd).
