Education

Derek completed his Ph.D. in the History of the Middle East at the University of Michigan in 2012. He earned an M.A. in Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, 1997, and graduated from Kenyon College with a B.A. in English.

Experience

Derek comes to Fusion Academy from a career in post-secondary education, specializing in the history, culture, and literature of Middle East and greater Islamic world in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Before teaching at Fusion, Derek was a faculty member at Columbia University, The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, and Dickinson College. His scholarly publications concern Persian migration narratives in the Indian Ocean, local historiography in Iran, and rituals of shrine visitation.
