Students gain a broad understanding of music and how it is used as a language of human expression. A large emphasis is placed on music history and exposing the students to music of diverse cultures and genres. Students study the standard system of notation and understand how music is organized into patterns including scales, intervals, chords, harmonic sequences and song forms. Students analyze compositions and scores and in turn create their own original compositions by synthesizing and applying common musical devices. Students understand the contextual relevance of music by studying the cultural, historical and aesthetic perspectives of its origins.
